Oliver update
I'm not sure how many people are still checking this, but here is the latest!
Oliver is standing on his own, and SERIOUSLY considering walking...
I'm thinking we have a week at most until things get even more hectic around here...
He has a repertoire of 3 words "Banana", "MaMa" "DaDa" (in that order of preference) and is working on "Lola No".
Legal update... We now have a Minnesota Birth certificate so his legal name is "Oliver Sielet Doe", previously he was offically known as "Si'elet Aklilu" and "Si'elet Brian Doe". He is very excited about this.
Overall, everything going super well, he is a VERY active and happy little guy!
Please check our flickr page and youtube as we update that much more often then this!

Lots of Fun!

Oliver is such a sweet baby! He is currently rolling over, giggling, chewing, drooling and blowing raspberries. The interesting thing is that this kid does not like to nap! He is up all day with the exception of 20 minute power naps but he sleeps from 8:00 to 6:00 which is nice!
Oliver also has a clean bill of health from the doctor and she has commented that he is the healthiest internationally adopted baby she has ever seen. She complemented our agency's care and records. She also was impressed by how well he is doing developmentally, she said it is obvious he was loved in Ethiopia!
Feel free to call or stop on over!

Update from Brian, Gina, Oliver:
The internet has been down for a couple of days sorry! Here is a recap of what has been going on... drool, poop and spit-up and... here are some more entertaining things.
Medically everything is going just fine. Oliver has almost finished his anitbiotic and the impetigo is almost entirely gone (healed over). Just a regular cold with a runny nose but it is also getting better.
Embassy Day went well. We have a little Ethiopian passport and Visa for the US. We will finalize everything at home.
On Wednesday we went to Hosana, the area where Oliver was found... it was a very long day, but it was really wonderful meeting some people. We met and heard the story from the man who named him, Si'elet, "a gift from God". He is a wonderful man and we will remember him and the day we met forever.
Then Thursday was the 5 year aniversary of the agency in Ethiopia, so it was quite a big deal, held at the UN building in Addis.... it was also a huge fiasco. The story will be much better told in person, but here is a tidbit - Oliver led a revolution and was suppressed by the UN, who apparently do not allow babies in their buildings. it was ridiculous. a celebration of an adoption agency and they treated the babies like terrorists. Actually its the first time I've ever heard of a successful UN enforcement action...
Everything is going great. We got up at 4:45 am to go on trip East to see hippos. But... after a long trip we didn't even see any. Oh well, he was a good traveler but overtired, he took a 3.5 hour nap and then slept from 8:30 to 6:30, tired little boy. Brian changed his first diaper in a moving van! No mishaps! Good job Brian!
We are packing getting ready to finally come home. Everyone is welcome to come to the airport if you are able, but definitely come over when we get home. Oliver is really used to lots of people but be prepared he may be crabby or sleepy but we would love to see all of you, LOLA too!

No news is good news!!!
Here is a sample itinerary of what our trip will be like. Click on the pictures and they should open up big enough to read!
On a super positive note Oliver has a NW frequent flier account, he will have almost 10,000 miles before he is 6 months old! He loves to travel just like his parents, look for him to get bumped up to first class.

We made it through court!!!
The next step (**see outline below) is that the written court order and a written letter from the Ministry of Women's Affairs need to be obtained by our staff in order for your child's birth certificate to be drawn up and sent to CHSFS-MN via e-mail attachment. This process usually takes about 2 weeks or so. Once we receive and review the birth certificate to confirm that everything is correct, you will receive a travel date for 3-4 weeks from this time and can confirm your ticket purchases.
Brief outline of the court process:
1. We receive a family’s child acceptance.
2. We notify our staff in Ethiopia to proceed forward.
3. The staff in Ethiopia prepares a family’s documents for submission to the registrar.
4. The family’s documents are submitted to the Registrar
5. The Registrar logs the documents in and awaits assignments of court dates by judges
6. A date for a hearing is given (you are currently waiting to be assigned a court date)
7. At the hearing, the judge reviews the case and either advises his/her decision or requests additional information
8. Decision is made or new court date is scheduled
9. When the decision is granted, the written court order is drafted and is usually issued within a week
10. Once the court order is issued, a letter of support is requested and received from the MOWA office (**you are here)
11. Once the MOWA letter is received, the birth certificate is issued - it usually takes 3-4 weeks from court decision for CHSFS to receive the birth certificate
12. When the birth certificate is issued, we will receive a scanned copy of it and we will verify that the information is correct. At that point, we will advise family of a travel date - approximately 3-4 weeks advance notice.
13. We advise Ethiopia staff that the birth certificate information is correct and they will proceed to obtain the child’s Ethiopian passport, Embassy medical exam and will prepare the final paperwork to submit to the Embassy.

Getting there... at a snail's pace ;)
Hello All!
Well April 3rd, our court date, is getting closer! This is the last court preceding in Ethiopia before we get our travel date. Here is a photo of what our life will be like in about 3 months. Enjoy!
The doll seems to be close to Oliver's size but Lola is a lot chubbier than the little doggie!

What's new?
We should receive an update and photos at the end of March. Stay tuned! We will not be able to post the pictures but we'll let you know and we'll make sure you can see little Oliver! Our court date is April 3rd. After the court date, barring any postponement, we will get our travel date a week or two after that. We are hoping to travel in May but we are at the mercy of the process and we know Oliver is in very good care.
The only other happening lately was wonderful baby shower hosted by our good friend Leah! Thanks Leah! The shower was Crosswinds get together it was a lot of fun and a really good morale booster. Who knew babies needed so many little things! Brian was amazed by the tiny socks! Thanks again to everyone for their support.

The usual suspects
- We got fingerprinted for the 4th time on saturday. We are getting really good at it. This is all for the US government to make REALLY sure that we are not bringing a little terrorist into the US. So, we can all sleep easier tonight.
- Gina gets her round of 5 vaccinations on Thursday. So she might come down with a touch of polio, yellow fever, etc next weekend. feel free to send your well wishes in advance.
- We did get a little bit of an update on Oliver! At about 2 months old he is 8.6 lbs (up from 7.5 last month) and grew about an inch to 21 inches. Its not as worrisome as you might think, They are a lot smaller, and also there is a lot of measurment error and typos. For example, they listed him as Female in the last report (we double checked, and he is still actually a he). so, we'll get another update in a couple weeks. all the updates get reviewed by the really excellent docs at the U of M international adoption clinic.

On a Brighter note....

Slow and steady
Although we were hoping for sooner, nothing bad or unusual has happened to our particular case, this is the normal procedure.
So please pray that things continue to go through normally from here out, but there wont be any news for a while. We will be getting more pictures and updates and will share as soon as we can.
FYI, this is the possible timeframe:

Fun times at the Doc!
Yellow fever was definitely my favorite of the 5 booster shots.
FYI, one of the side effects is organ failure and death. G and I had a bet going on which organ it would be. So far, so good.
Still waiting on a travel date, the courts have our name in a pile, and things are progressing normally. The estimate is still late March early April, so keep your fingers crossed!

Getting Closer!!!

Above is our most recent update on our page at the agency, not much left to do! We will know when we travel in the next couple of weeks, our referral is currently on its way to the Ethiopian courts.
Right now we are keeping busy getting things ready and doing our next round of paperwork, baby visa and passport. Next week we are going to get our immunizations so we are ready to travel when they give us the go! We need to get a Yellow Fever shot, not very common here in MN!
Thanks to everyone for the congratulations and well wishes! We appreciate all the positive comments it keeps us going while we wait!
